2) A Guide to Color Fading and Color Transfer

New denim products may naturally fade or transfer color before the first wash because excess indigo dye can remain on the fabric surface. This is a characteristic of denim and not necessarily a defect. To minimize color transfer, wash separately before first use and avoid contact with light-colored items. UNIQLO cannot guarantee or compensate for other items that may be affected by color transfer during normal use.

FAQ: Why Is My New Jeans Fading or Transferring Color?

Q: My jeans are fading or transferring color even though I haven't washed them yet. Is this a defect?

A: No, Denim products are typically dyed using indigo dye, which gives jeans their unique color and appearance. When jeans are new and have not been washed before, there may still be excess dye remaining on the surface of the fabric. As a result, some color fading or color transfer may occur during normal wear, especially in areas exposed to friction.

  • Color may transfer to light-colored clothing, bags, shoes, furniture, or vehicle seats.
  • Temporary color transfer may occur on skin due to friction.
  • Slight fading may appear in areas that experience regular rubbing or movement.

Q: How can I reduce color transfer before using it?

A: We recommend:

  • Wash the jeans separately before first use whenever possible.
  • Avoiding contact with light-colored clothing, bags, furniture, or car seats.
  • Following the care instructions provided on the product label.
  • Wash dark-colored denim separately from other garments.

Q: Will UNIQLO cover or compensate for items affected by color transfer?

A: As color transfer may occur depending on factors such as wear conditions, friction, storage environment, and contact with other materials, UNIQLO is unable to guarantee, assess, repair, replace, or compensate for other garments, accessories, furniture, or personal belongings that may have been affected by color transfer from the jeans.

Q: What should I do if I believe the fading is excessive?

A: If you feel the fading or color transfer is unusually severe compared to normal denim characteristics, please contact our Customer Center and provide photos of the product and the affected area so that we can review the condition and assist further.

A Guide to Color Fading and Color Transfer

Before following the next care instructions, we recommend checking the product care label. The care label can be found sewn inside the bottom left for normal tops; inside the near left pocket for outerwear; inside the near left pocket for bottoms.

Jeans are a type of garment that increases in value for the owner over time. A pair of well-worn jeans are a dream to wear. Denim should be washed infrequently, instead, air them as often as you can.

When washing:

  1. Separate: Wash your jeans separately as the colours transfer very easily. Jeans may also damage other clothing if washing together, as denim fabrics are thick and stiff.
  2. Use a detergent specially made for denim: Most detergents are either low alkaline or neutral. When washing jeans, consider the neutral laundry detergents that are reserved for delicate items, to keep your jeans color lively for longer.
  3. Water temperature: It’s preferable to wash your jeans with cold water, to better preserve the colour. Only use hot or warm water if you need to remove stains, as higher temperatures might cause the colour to fade.
  4. Machine wash with gentle cycles and inside-out, as jeans can fade easily due to friction.
  5. Never tumble dry, instead hang or dry flat.
